MITACs Research Student (Fall 2026)
At Nasdaq Verafin, you’ll have the chance to work on meaningful research in an envrionment where curiosity, collaboration, and innovation comes first. In this role, you’ll tackle a hands-on research project applying cutting-edge AI techniques to real-world financial crime problems – including fraud and money laundering detection.
You don’t need to have all the answers on day one – we'll support you with the resources, mentorship, and team connections to make your research impactful.
Note: Applicants must be an active Masters or PhD student at Memorial University for the entire duration of the internship.
What You'll Do:
Build a research project from conception to implementation, focused on fraud and money laundering detection.
Apply advanced AI techniques to real-world financial crime problems using production datasets.
Collaborate with teammates across our AI research and product teams.
Write an academic paper/report based on research findings.
Present results at Nasdaq Verafin’s AI Knowledge Exchange.
What We're Looking For:
Students currently and continuing enrollment in a Masters or PhD Program at Memorial University, with continued enrollment through the full duration of the internship.
Proficiency in Python and other relevant programming languages.
Strong data analysis skills and ability to work independently on research.
Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take on new challenges.
Good communication and collaboration skills in team environments.
Nice-to-Have:
Experience with machine learning frameworks and methodologies.
Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS (SageMaker, S3) and data tools.
Knowledge of Large Language Models and their applications.
