About the Role
You will provide independent second-line oversight of AML/CFT controls for crypto-asset activities. You will review escalations and suspicious activity assessments, maintain compliance policies, assess monitoring controls, oversee providers, monitor regulatory developments, and support regulatory examinations and MiCA compliance initiatives.
Requirements
- At least three years of experience in AML or Financial Crime Compliance, including Second Line oversight
- Experience with crypto-assets, VASPs/CASPs, payments, or card products
- Knowledge of Malta's AML framework, including the PMLA, PMLFTR, and FIAU Implementing Procedures
- Understanding of MiCA, the Travel Rule under Regulation (EU) 2023/1113, and relevant EBA guidance
- Familiarity with MFSA CASP authorisation and supervision requirements and the FIAU's supervisory role
- Experience supporting MLRO activities, including escalation reviews and suspicious activity assessments
- Knowledge of blockchain analytics tools such as Chainalysis, Elliptic, or TRM Labs
- Ability to provide independent challenge to the First Line of Defence
- Ability to use AI responsibly to analyse AML data and support human-reviewed compliance decisions
Responsibilities
- Review and challenge AML escalations from the First Line of Defence
- Assess risks involving PEPs, sanctions, adverse media, mixers, privacy coins, unhosted wallets, chain-hopping, and high-risk VASP counterparties
- Use AI-enabled tools to enhance AML monitoring, risk assessment, investigations, and identification of financial-crime typologies
- Support suspicious activity assessments, draft STRs/SARs, and blockchain analysis
- Review and maintain AML/CFT policies, procedures, and standards
- Oversee AML-related outsourced services, including blockchain analytics, KYC, and screening providers
- Assess AML risk assessments, customer-risk methodologies, and transaction-monitoring controls
- Monitor FIAU, MFSA, EBA, and ESMA regulatory developments
- Analyse escalations, typologies, and thematic findings for management and Board reporting
- Support regulatory examinations, audits, supervisory engagements, and remediation projects
- Contribute to MiCA authorisation and ongoing compliance initiatives
